Colour & Tonality problems

Is there any method that can bring the 'in yer face' contrast and colour to more pastel shades like those of watercolour paintings? I've tried separating the colour and luminosity elements but have so far failed to achieve the subtle effect that I'm looking for.

Do you have examples and comparison? I'd be glad to make some suggestions but I need to see what you are talking about.
