How It Works

The two applications are somewhat different in technique and use, but the desired result is the same: make the area of the image that you don't want as part of the shape blend with the background. The matching technique works by blending the image edges with the background using the exact same color as the background; the transparent method works by telling browsers what pixels to ignore when displaying the image by assigning transparency as a color. Using either method the result can be essentially the same.
